AUDDIS Reason Codes
AUDDIS — the Automated Direct Debit Instruction Service — carries a new Direct Debit instruction to the payer’s bank, where it is validated before the mandate exists. When validation fails, the bank returns one of these codes: the account is closed, the account type cannot take Direct Debits, the payer’s name is missing, or the account details fail the modulus check.

Frequently asked questions
- What does AUDDIS stand for?
- Automated Direct Debit Instruction Service — the service that carries a new Direct Debit instruction to the payer's bank for validation.
- What happens when a new instruction is rejected?
- The mandate is not set up, so nothing can be collected against it. The code tells you why: most often an invalid account, a payer name the bank cannot match, or a reference it will not accept.
- Can a file-format problem cause an AUDDIS rejection?
- Not by itself. The code describes the account or the instruction, and it arrives after the file has been processed. A file that will not upload because of its structure is a separate, format-level problem.
These codes describe why a Direct Debit mandate or payment was rejected — a banking/account issue, not a file-format problem. If instead your BACS submission file is malformed and won't upload to the bank (wrong record length, bad line endings, a UHF1/UTL1 mix-up, or totals that don't reconcile), that's what BACS Check repairs — paste or upload your file here →
